Day 1: San Jose
Arrive in San Jose; meeting, assistance and transfer to your hotel in San Jose.
Day 2: San Jose, Tortuguero National Park
Today you will get an early start heading by motor coach towards the Northern Caribbean’s lowlands. Drive through the beautiful evergreen mountains and landscapes of the Braulio Carrillo National Park. Upon arrival continue to the Caño Blanco Dock, to board a boat to the Tortuguero National Park. A scenic two and half hour boat ride will take you through the canals sheltered in the jungle of the rainforest. Upon arrival, enjoy a home-made lunch. In the afternoon you will visit the village of Tortuguero, where you will learn about the lifestyle of local residents and the conservation efforts being done to protect the sea turtles that come to spawn each year along the 22 miles of protected coastline. [B/L/D]
Day 3: Tortuguero National Park
Tortuguero is a great destination for ecotourism lovers. Today you can enjoy a guided hike through the jungle, or explore the secondary canals of this paradisiacal place. Observe the different species of mammals, birds and reptiles. Tortuguero offers a full contact with nature as much of the National Park extends along its unspoiled beaches that serve as refuge for spawning of the sea turtles, an event that occurs between July and September. [B/L/D]
Day 4: Tortuguero National Park, Arenal Volcano
At mid-morning your journey continues with a boat transfer back to the local dock. Followed by land to Guapiles, where you will have lunch. Afterwards, continue towards the northern lowlands. You pass the cities of Puerto Viejo (Sarapiqui), San Miguel, Venecia and Aguas Zarcas. Along the way enjoy the beautiful scenery of the mountains around you.
Arrive at La Fortuna Village in the late afternoon where the mighty Arenal Volcano will welcome you! This volcano has been active since 1969 and it has become one of the world’s most active volcanoes and one of Costa Rica’s main highlights. Check in at your hotel. You are staying here for the next 2 nights.
This evening relax at the world famous Tabacón Hot Springs. The natural hot springs feature a hot river that flows through a series of pools from cascading falls to tropical gardens. Tabacón is a very unique location full of natural jewels that definitely you cannot miss staying at Arenal Volcano area. [B/L/D]
Day 5: Arenal Volcano
Day at leisure to explore the area at your pace. Our recommendation is to visit the Arenal Volcano National Park that protects an active volcano with constant moderate explosions accompanied by roar, gases and ash emissions that raise high in the air. Other options in the area are the Cano Negro Wildlife Refuge, the Venado Caves, La Fortuna Waterfall, and activities such as river floating, nature walks, hot springs, zip-lines, rafting, hiking and horseback riding. [B]
Day 6: Arenal Volcano, Monteverde Claud Forest
In the morning depart from the Arenal Volcano to the Monteverde Cloud Forest. Enjoy the crossing (by boat) of the Arenal Lake: the largest and the most important one in Costa Rica.
Next drive through the Tilarán Mountain Range. The final portion of your journey is on gravel roads. Enjoy the beautiful mountain scenery. You will be staying here the next two nights.
Monteverde is a great destination to experience the culture and traditions of Costa Rica. This afternoon you will visit a family-run business and learn about the traditional methods of production in a local farm. Walk through the different plantations, including sugarcane, coffee, bananas, and macadamia nuts and understand the artisan production process using typical artifacts. Later visit a Tilapia fish project and a small sugar mill and taste a delicious candy made here. [B]
Day 7: Monteverde Cloud Forest
Day at leisure to enjoy the optional sights and activities in the area.
We suggest a visit to the nearby town of Santa Elena, with its beautiful orchid garden, frog pond, butterfly gardens and art galleries. If you prefer you can goo horseback riding, birdwatching, or take a canopy/zip-line tour. [B]
