Day 1: Victoria Falls
Upon arrival at Victoria Falls International Airport you’ll be met by your guide and transferred to your hotel. Who does not know Victoria Falls, named by Livingstone in honor of the Queen. This mile-long and 312-foot high fault is a natural wonder of this world, whose mist rising in the sky inspired the local Makalolos with a much more appropriate surname: "Mosi-oa-Tunya" (the smoke that rumbles). Rest of the day at leisure to rest and relax. Dinner at the hotel. [D]
Day 2: Victoria Falls
Today, discover the majestic Victoria Falls, with exciting activities and plenty to see and explore, including a visit to the canopy. Lunch at a local restaurant. During the afternoon visit to the Victoria Falls Wildlife Trust, meet the Ambassador Herd of elephants and participate in game drives, birding and nature walks on the Wild Horizons Wildlife Sanctuary. In the evening watch the sun set below the horizon on a 2-hour cruise on the Zambezi River. Enjoy cocktails and hors d'oeuvres on the deck as Zimbabwe's diverse wildlife flock to the water's edge. Watch flocks of birds as they bite and soar across the sky, soak up the last rays of the African sun. Return to the camp for dinner and overnight. [B/L/D]
Day 3: Victoria Falls, Hwange National Park
Allow 3 hours of driving, including a safari in the park. Return to the camp for breakfast and transfer by road to Hwange Park and your lodge. This park is located right on the border of the Kalahari Sands, a place originally occupied by the San Bushmen, the only people able to live in this area. The other Bantu groups considered the area too hostile and dry to live there permanently. It was not until the 19th century that the Ndebeles, a tribe of Ngumi origin, hunted antelope in these lands. With the arrival of the white man, hunting was practiced in excess in the region. The park was created in 1929 and 3.6 million acres were declared a protected region. After the creation of 60 artificial water points, Hwange became one of the regions with the highest concentration of animals in Central Africa. Lunch at the lodge and safari in in the park in 4x4 open vehicle. Dinner at the lodge. [B/L/D]
Day 4: Hwange National Park
From the huge herds of elephants, sable and plains game, to the majestic hunting predators, The Hide is the perfect place to nestle yourself in and watch the action of the bush. Adventures include day and night game drives, guided bush walks and exceptional game viewing in the seclusion of the camp’s unique underground hides. For those who are a little more adventurous, The Dove’s Nest Treehouse is available at no extra charge. Located 10 minutes away from camp, this rustic gem sleepout has the perfect vantage point from which to view wildlife safely, quietly. If you enjoy wildlife photography, this is the place to show your skills as the animal subjects are abundant and varied. After an exhilarating day of game viewing, you may retreat to the cool refuge of the camp’s swimming pool and enjoy delectable meals savored al fresco or in the elegant dining room. [B/L/D]
Day 5: Hwange National Park, Mana Pools National Park
Breakfast at the lodge and flight to Mana Pools airport. You will have the privilege of flying over the spectacular Zambezi River basin at low altitude and getting an overview of the region you are about to discover. Installation and lunch at the lodge. Relaxation by the river. In the late afternoon take. A safari run for an introduction to the park’s fauna and flora. Dinner and overnight at the lodge. [B/L/D]
Day 6: Mana Pools National Park
Mana Pools National Park is situated on the banks of the mighty Zambezi River where you will find John's Camp nestled amongst canopies of Trichelia and Mahogany trees. It is a truly natural wilderness and the only wild walking National Park in Africa. Across the vast floodplain, one can walk with the giants - African Bull Elephants, dine amidst herds of buffalo, gaze upon a pride of lions, enjoy sundowners with hippos on the banks of the Zambezi River and bird watch over 400 species of birds. [B/L/D]
Day 7: Mana Pools National Park, Lake Kariba (Matusadona National Park)
Breakfast and transfer by small plane to Lake Kariba. Kariba's story merges with that of its dam. The town of Kariba arose in 1955 as a camp for the dam construction site. Desperate, the Batonka people, who occupied the valley and who were to be displaced before the flooding of their territory, summoned the help of Nyaminyami, the river god with the head of fish and serpent tail, begging him to intervene. Several unexplained incidents happened during construction, but the dam was finally finished in the late 1950s. The Batonka still maintain today that Nyaminyami is not yet finished with this dam and that he will not be satisfied until the monumental obstruction of the river is not swept away. Lake Kariba is now home to a number of magnificent lodges on the many islands of the lake and is a true vacation and relaxation paradise. Lunch at the safari lodge and a boat ride in the afternoon. Dinner and overnight at the lodge. [B/L/D]
Day 8: Matusadona National Park
Experience Zimbabwean wildlife on and off the land. This rich wilderness area offers exceptional game drives as well as walking and fishing safaris, all in the company of highly trained professional guides. Healthy populations of predators, including lion, leopard, hyena, and cheetah as well as elephant, buffalo, and antelope frequent the shoreline. Hippos and crocodiles are abundant in the cool waters. Birdlife is prolific, with 350 species having been identified in the area. Try a spot of tiger fishing and watch the endless hippo pods honking as they take cover in the cool waters of the lake. [B/L/D]
Day 9: Lake Kariba, USA
After breakfast you will be transferred to the airstrip to take a small plane flight to Victoria Falls, where you’ll check in for your connecting flight back home. [B]
