Day 1: Edinburgh
Upon arrival at the airport in Edinburgh you’ll be met by our representative who will drive you the hotel in the city. The rest of the day is at leisure and, if you feel up to it, you may start your discovery by walking the old city, and having lunch or dinner at a local restaurant or Pub.
Day 2: Edinburgh
We’ll meet at your hotel bright and early to give a short briefing on Edinburgh and the surrounding area before embarking on our ‘Edinburgh in a Day’ tour. We’ll hop in our private car as we drive through Edinburgh to the heart of the Old Town—the Royal Mile up to the Castle esplanade, where we will have our first official stop: Edinburgh Castle. We’ll discuss the unique geology of the city and how it affected the positioning of the fortress. We’ll talk about the medieval origins of Edinburgh, the role of the Castle in the burgh, and the turbulent relations between Scotland and England. We’ll continue with a visit to Greyfriar Churchyard, St. GIles Cathedral, and the Royal Mile. This is a snapshot into our Old Town. Leaving the Old Town behind us, we’ll proceed east towards the iconic Arthur Seat. Here, if the weather allows, we may decide to climb up part of the way, or simply drive to one of the viewpoints and admire the spectacular sights before heading to lunch at a nearby local pub. From here we’ll proceed north, to the New Town. Having the car will allow us to take in the vastness and grandeur of this project that dominated the European architectural scene of the 18th and 19th centuries. From Calton Hill to Charlotte Square, we’ll admire these examples of Georgian architecture and how they reflect the ideals of the Age of Enlightenment. At the end of the tour, you have the option to be dropped off at the hotel, or at one of the many restaurants and pubs that Edinburgh is famous for. [B/L]
Day 3: Edinburgh, Dunkeld, Loch Ness, Inverness
The tour goes to Dunkeld, on the banks of the River Tay. Visit the Cairngorms National Park in the heart of the Scottish Highlands. Admire the fabulous scenery, from wild moorlands and soaring mountain peaks to spectacular rivers and tranquil lochs. Learn about the plants and animals in the native pine woods of the Park. See a rich cultural heritage with castles and fortified houses. Continue on to the mysterious Loch Ness, best known for the alleged sightings of the legendary Loch Ness Monster. We finish the day at Inverness with dinner at a local restaurant or the hotel. [B/D]
Day 4: Inverness (Ullapool, Lochinver)
Departure to Assynt, famous for its picturesque landscape. See Corrieshalloch Gorge, a spectacular natural chasm that is well worth a visit. The gorge is almost a mile long and some 200 ft deep, yet in places is only 40 ft across at the top. Enjoy the tranquility of the town of Ullapool and admire some of the most beautiful unspoiled scenery in the world, undiscovered beaches, forests, hidden glens with stags grazing, waterfalls, bird sanctuaries to explore, breathtaking twisty single-track roads. Visit the 15th century ruins of Ardvreck Castle, situated on a rocky promontory that juts into Loch Assynt. A rampart cut off the peninsula. Enjoy the Achmelvich Bay, a beautiful spot in the North West of Scotland. The turquoise color of the water really catches the eye and contrasts well with the lovely white sands. The tour finishes with a visit to the traditional fishing village of Lochinver. Return to Inverness for dinner and overnight. [B/D]
Day 5: Inverness, Torridon, Applecross, Plockton, Portee
The tour starts by travelling to Torridon, a small village, whose name is also applied to the area surrounding the village, particularly the and the mountains to the north of Glen Torridon. Enjoy the tranquility and the view of Loch Torridon. Travelling along the wild coastline of Applecross, a beautiful and tranquil peninsula resting on the rugged coast of Wester Ross. Continue along Britain’s highest road to the “tropical” palm tree lined village of Plockton, which is considered to be the jewel in the Highlands' crown. Departure to the picturesque harbor town of Portee, Isle of Skye, arriving in time for dinner. [B/D]
Day 6: Portee (Trotternish, Neist Point, Talisker)
Explore the island of Skye. Visit the Quiraing, the northernmost summit of the Trotternish Ridge on the Isle of Skye. The whole of the Trotternish Ridge escarpment was formed by a great series of landslips. The Quiraing is the only part of the slip still moving. Visit the lighthouse at Neist, a popular viewpoint on the most westerly point of Skye. Go to the Talisker Distillery and discover how Malt whiskey is made. This alluring, sweet, full-bodied single malt is so easy to enjoy, and like Skye itself, so hard to leave. [B/D]
Day 7: Portee, Dornie, Glen Coe, Edinburgh
The trip starts by returning to the mainland. Visit Eilean Donan Castle, a definite highlight. It was built in the 13th century and the place is, in reality, as amazing as it looks in photos. Enjoy the view, travelling through the rugged scenery of the 5 Sisters of Kintail and Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the United Kingdom. Visit the Glen Coe, considered one of the most spectacular and beautiful places in Scotland. The narrow glen shows a grim grandeur. Back to Edinburgh. [B]
Day 8: Edinburgh, USA
At the appointed time you’ll be met by your driver and transferred to the airport to board your flight back home. [B]
