Day 2: Lima (Barranco)
This morning we’ll discover the Barranco neighborhood, an interesting and beautiful area, whose picturesque squares and street art have inspired some of Peru’s and Latin America’s finest artists who called it home. Barranco has earned a reputation as the bohemian district of Lima not only because of its artists, but also because it offers Lima’s most popular bars, some of its best restaurants and, definitely, some of the best coffee shops. During the tour you’ll have the opportunity to taste some of the local drinks and snacks. The rest of the day is free for you continue discovering the neighborhood. [B/S]
Day 3: Lima (Sailing along Lima’s Coast)
Think Lima, think food and art… but what about a sunset yacht ride along the Pacific Coast? Embark on a voyage along Lima’s coastline, setting out from Peru’s only luxury marina. Enjoy a wonderful sunset sail along the bay, or a full day excursion to the Palomino Islands where you can watch and swim with sea lions. When the sun begins to set, we'll set sail again to admire the Costa Verde and the Morro Solar illuminated by this magical lighting and… with some luck you'll see some dolphins. [B/S]
Day 4: Lima, Cusco, Sacred Valley
Deluxe transfer to the airport for your flight to Cusco where you’ll be met and driven to your hotel in the Scared Valley. Time to relax until dinner at the hotel Tambo del Inka. [B/D]
Day 5: Sacred Valley
The Sacred Valley, located between Cusco and Machu Picchu, was unquestionably an important area for the Incas. Its agreeable climate and fertile plains create the perfect conditions for growing crops. For the Incas, this region was also on the route to the jungle and had therefore played a key role in trading fruits and plants of the tropical lowlands. Today, the Sacred Valley remains a lush agricultural region supplying the city of Cusco with many agricultural products. Today’s first stop is Pisac’s Andean market, a commercial place for agricultural products and handicrafts providing insights into the culture of this region and shopping opportunity! In the afternoon, visit the Ollantaytambo ruins, named after Ollanta, a warrior who fell in love with an Inca princess but was not allowed to marry her. One of the best-preserved sites of this area, known as Hanan Huacaypata, is made out of elegantly crafted stone walks. On our way to Chinchero, a village with a rich Inca history that specializes in textile products we stop for lunch at Hacienda Huayoccari, a historic mansion with beautifully flowered gardens. The house itself is snuggled into a forest of Eucalyptus and Piconay trees and offers superb views of the surrounding countryside. Upon arrival you are treated with a freshly prepared Pisco Sour and are then presented with the daily specials, many of which feature authentic Peruvian cuisine infused with organic ingredients homegrown on the estate. Afterwards, you are brought to your hotel. This evening enjoy dinner at the hotel Tambo del Inka. [B/LE/D]
Day 6: Scred Valley
A free day to relax or, maybe, complete your visit of the Sacred Valley. You may arrange with your guide a tour of Maras and Moray. Just 6 miles from Urubamba are the Maras salt flats, a collection of over 3,000 saltwater ponds that make for an incredible spectacle. Walking there is truly magical and one of the great must-sees of the Sacred Valley and it would be a shame to miss it! It is even possible to visit the salt flats with a local community that offers a complete experience with workshops to discover the traditions and tasting of chicha morada and guinea pig! Then, drive 4.5 miles to Moray to visit the amazing circular agricultural terraces reminiscent of an amphitheater. In Inca times, it was an agricultural research center, made up of circular terraced platforms creating 20 different microclimates, with the added bonus of an irrigation system. With a temperature difference of up to 60°F between the highest terrace and the lowest, they could grow many plants from the Andes, but also temperate environments and the jungle! There has even been the creation of hybrid species. [B/D]
Day 7: Sacred Valley, Aguas Calientes
Embark on an unforgettable round trip from Urubamba to Machu Picchu, absorbing majestic Andean landscapes while enjoying excellent service aboard the PeruRail Sacred Valley train accommodating just 33 passengers and exuding the elegance of the 1920s, reflected in the sumptuous Dining Car and Observation Bar Car. The experience starts upon your arrival at the station, where you will be greeted with an Andean infusion in the Observatory Bar Car while you delight yourself with the landscapes of the Sacred Valley. En route to Machu Picchu you are served a gourmet lunch in the Dining Car, including an appetizer, entrée and dessert, with a glass of wine and delicate petits fours. On arrival at Machu Picchu you’ll be met and transferred to your hotel for overnight. [B/L]
Day 8: Aguas Calientes, Machu Picchu, Aguas Calientes, Ollantaytambo, Cusco
Walk to the bus station to take your bus up to Machu Picchu. This citadel is considered to be one of the most extraordinary examples of landscape architecture in the world. Located in an enclave on the saddle of a mountain overlooking the deep canyon of the Urubamba River, in an area of lush tropical forest, it served as a place of worship, a site for star-gazing and a private hacienda of the family of the Inca Pachacutec. It consists of two main areas one agricultural, formed mainly by mountains and food stores, and the other urban, which is noted for its sacred zone with temples, squares and royal tombs. The stairways and canals carved out of stone are recurrent throughout this remarkable archaeological site declared a Peruvian Historical Sanctuary in 1981 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983. In 2007, Machu Picchu was chosen as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Your tour, conducted by an archeologist guide will take you through the main parts of the citadel and provide explanations for each of the sites. Return to Aguas Calientes to board the Sacred valley train to Uubamba enjoying a gastronomic dinner in the Dining car. You’ll be met at Urubamba station and driven to to Cusco for overnight. [B/D]
Note: Luggage allowed: A day backpack with 5 kilos per person. Rest of luggage, must be left at your hotel and picked-up on the way back. Train schedule subject to availability.
Day 9: Cusco (City and ruins)
It is time to explore the famous city of Cusco! Today’s adventure starts on the main square, known in Inca times as Huacaypata (Warriors Square), which was the scene for many key events in Cusco’s history. The cathedral, built between 1560 and 1664 with large stones of red granite taken from the Inca Fortress of Sacsayhuaman, is one of the most impressive buildings in the city and contains one of the most significant collections of gold and silver work from the colonial period. Subsequently, you continue to Koricancha and the Convent of Santo Domingo. The convent was built on the amazing Koricancha (Site of Gold), the most important temple dedicated to the worship of the sun with walls covered with gold leaf. The convent was built on a foundation of polished stone structures that were taken from an Inca sanctuary. You will also visit the ruins near Cusco, such as Sacsayhuaman Fortress with its immense temple’ walls made up of huge stones creating a zigzag pattern, the red Fort Puca Pucara, Qenko Amphitheatre and Tambomachay, the Inca baths. The perfect place to learn more about the Inca culture! Afterwards, you return to your hotel in Cusco. [B]
Day 10: Cusco (Stand-up Yoga)
Upon arrival at Piuray Outdoor Center you’ll be received with a hot drink, water and snacks. This will be an ideal time to relax, contemplate the place and take photos. Your assigned guide will provide you with all the equipment for stand-up paddle Yoga, accompanied by briefings on safety and paddling technique. The rowing tour will start for 20 min. to reach a very quiet place in the lagoon, where we will tie the boards to each other so they don’t separate and start the class, which will have a duration of 40 min. We will finish with a breathing and immersion technique in the icy waters of the Piuray lagoon (optional). You may opt to have lunch and stay in the town until it is time to retire. [B]
Day 11: Cusco (Cooking Class)
Today’s gastronomical journey that takes you throughout the Peruvian coast, highlands and jungle. The different and unequivocal flavors that you will try throughout our cooking class will spoil your palate as you participate in the best culinary experience found in the city of Cusco. In just 4 hours you’ll engage in our six-step course including topics such as the history of Peruvian gastronomy, concepts of the kitchen, tropical fruit and Andean super food tasting, Pisco tasting, Pisco Sour and Chilcano de Pisco preparation and, finally, the preparation and cooking of two of Peru’s most emblematic dishes: Ceviche and Lomo Saltado with Alpaca. In addition, the chefs from our restaurants will spoil you with creole and Novo-Andina small bite appetizers such as cuy (guinea pig), stuffed potatoes, aji de gallina and causas, amongst others. (Click for the detailed lesson program) [B/L]
Day 12: Cusco, Puerto Maldonado (Peruvian Amazon)
Your guide will drive you to Cusco’s airport for your flight to Puerto Maldonado. Begin to experience the enchantment of the rainforest, as you take a 45-minute boat ride along the Madre de Dios River to arrive at your lodge. On your first day, we recommend a guided walk along the Trail system, into the Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica natural area, where you will discover the Amazon Basin. This trail offers an excellent introduction to the jungle environment, winding past impressive trees such as the Shihuahuaco, and the strangely beautiful strangler fig, offering excellent opportunities for bird watching and observing exotic insects. We also recommend that, on the first night, you take our Twilight River excursion — a guided afternoon boat ride on the Madre de Dios river. Witness the transformation from a diurnal to a nocturnal world: animals and birds of the daytime give way to species specially adapted to the night. After dinner, you may retire early to your own cabaña, or join us to talk about your experience in the rainforest, as you listen to the intriguing sounds of the jungle at night. [B/D]
Note: The excursions at Inkaterra Reserva Amazónica are a la carte, therefore this is just an example itinerary.
Day 13: Puerto Maldonado (Peruvian Amazon)
Wake up late or rise early — the choice is yours. A full buffet breakfast begins at 5:30 am, for those who want to avoid the heat and enjoy nature at its fullest. This morning, you may visit the Lake Sandoval during an excursion into the Tambopata National Reserve. Glide in a wooden canoe, across a beautiful, mirror-like oxbow lake that is home to the endangered giant river otter, as well as red howler monkeys, red-bellied macaws, anacondas, side-neck turtles and black caimans. Return to the Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica for lunch. After lunch, consider visiting the remarkable Inkaterra Canopy Walkway and Anaconda Walk. Ascending the first tower, 95 feet above the forest ground, you begin your encounter with the treetop realm. For more than a quarter of a mile, you will literally walk through the rainforest canopy on a suspension bridge network linking eight observation platforms. During this hour-and-a-half expedition, be on the lookout for bright toucans, woodpeckers, trogons, monkeys and the three-toed sloth. If you wish you may extend your excursion and appreciate the sunset from one of the towers. After your descent from the Canopy, experience the Anaconda Walk for about 30 minutes along the 656-foot wooden bridge over the Aguajales swamps. In this lush eco-system, you may observe the various species of amphibians, birds, mammals, abundant flora, trees and there’s the possibility of seeing snakes of this flooded marshland. The walk finishes by returning to the lodge. [B/L/D]
Day 14: Puerto Maldonado (Peruvian Amazon), Lima
Enjoy a full breakfast before departure. A 45-minute return trip by boat on the Madre de Dios River takes you to Puerto Maldonado, where you will visit the Butterfly House. Peru boasts the greatest variety of butterflies in the world, with 3,700 known species. Many of these can be seen at the Butterfly House, a showcase for the variety, beauty and adaptability of these fascinating insects. Continue to the airport to board your flight to Lima.
