Day 2: Copenhagen
We start today’s tour from the small and unimposing statue of The Little Mermaid, based on a tale by Hans Christian Andersen, situated on a rock in the harbor that became a Copenhagen icon. Make a wish at the fountain of Gefion, which features a large-scale group of animal figures being driven by the legendary Norse goddess, Gefjun, see Amalienborg Palace, the winter home of the Danish royal family and continue to the Parliament and the Rosenborg Castle, built in typical Dutch Renaissance style. Walk around the Nyhavn Harbor that used to be an old sailors' quarters and is a colorful part of Copenhagen nowadays. Rest of the day free. After dinner, enjoy the evening illuminations in romantic Tivoli Gardens. [B/D]
Day 3: Copenhagen (Helsingor, Hillerod)
Departure to the castles of North Sealand driving to the impressive Kronborg castle, the most famous castle in Denmark, also known all over the world from Shakespeare's Hamlet. Continue to Frederiksborg in Hillerod the largest Renaissance palace in Scandinavia. After lunch in Hillerod return to Copenhagen for diner and overnight. [B/.L/D]
Day 4: Copenhagen, Odense
Departure to the island of Fyn to visit the fantastic Egeskov castle, Europe's best-preserved Renaissance water castle. Continue to Odense, birth place of the famous writer Hans Christian Andersen, for lunch. In the afternoon, enjoy a mixture of an exciting vibrant atmosphere, beautiful street scenes, great relaxation opportunities and a rich cultural heritage. Dinner and overnight at the hotel. [B/L/D]
Day 5: Odense, Ribe, Jelling, Arhus
Travel to Ribe, the oldest town in Denmark, famous for the stork nests on rooftops. We stop to visit the Cathedral, built in 948 (although largely rebuilt in the 12th century), that is also the oldest in Denmark. The Voldemar dynasty spared no expense in rebuilding the cathedral, mostly in Romanesque style. After the visit, continue to Jelling, a typical rural town, once hosting the court of King Gorm the Elder. See the Jelling stones, big monolithic rune stones. Visit the old church with its priceless frescoes conserved from the 13th century. After lunch at a local restaurant, departure to Arhus enjoying some free time before dinner at the hotel. [B/L/D]
Day 6: Arhus (Ebeltoft)
Visit the Den Gamle By open-air museum ("The Old Town") that Michelin Guide considers to be "one of the finest open-air museums in Denmark"! Visiting Den Gamle By is an interesting and playful throwback to the past whether it be the 18th century, the beginning of the 20th or even the 1970s. Each area of the park corresponds to a historical period and everything is there: some 75 houses (venues) from all over Denmark expertly reconstructed, shops, people's clothing... Also see the workshops with their equipment and windmills. After lunch travel along the Jutland coast to Ebeltof to see the restored battle frigate Jylland, the largest wooden ship in the world. See the smallest town hall in the world and return to Arhus for dinner and overnight. [B/L/D]
Day 7, Arhus, Odden, Roskilde, Copenhagen
We drive to the pier to take the ferry to Zealand Island, arriving in Odden after 2 ¼-hour trip. After disembarking, we’ll drive another hour to reach Roskilde for lunch. In the afternoon visit the ancient city, dating from the Viking Age, situated on the fjord of the same name, the longest and deepest in Denmark. Capital of Denmark between the 10th and the 15th centuries, Roskilde is nowadays a magnificent city where one discovers a plethora of tourist gems. Dotted with beautiful modern houses, sublime cathedrals and several museums this historic town is a must-see for history buffs. Then continue to Copenhagen with a little time before a farewell dinner at a typical Danish restaurant. Overnight at the hotel. [B/L/D]
