Day 2: Istanbul (Walking the Old City)
The first full day in Istanbul begins with a visit to the Hippodrome - for more than 1000 years the Hippodrome was the Byzantine center for sporting and social life; including chariot races, coronations, parades and court ceremonies. The Egyptian Obelisk (carved in 1500 BCE and moved to Istanbul in 390 AD) is one of the best- preserved obelisks in the world. After strolling around the Hippodrome area, we will visit the Blue Mosque - the Grand Mosque of the Ottomans. This is a still-functioning mosque and offers beautiful Iznik ceramic tile work inside as well as spectacular architecture inside and out. The Hagia Sophia is our next stop - regarded as one of the marvels of architecture and engineering, the Hagia Sophia is currently a museum with a rich history. Built in 537 AD it is still considered the epitome of Byzantine architecture. Later converted to a mosque and then to its current state as a museum, the Hagia Sofia is one of the highlights of your Turkish holiday. Before lunch we will also visit the underground Basilica’s Cistern which offers rows upon rows of marble columns and carved statues in this beautiful water reservoir. Enjoy your lunch with views of the Hagia Sofia. After lunch we will take a short stroll to the famous Topkapi Palace - the imperial palace of the Ottomans. After touring the palace, we will relax on the terraces of the palace overlooking the Bosporus of Istanbul and enjoy a cup of Turkish coffee before returning to your hotel. Overnight in Istanbul. [B/L]
Day 3: Istanbul (Contemporary Tour)
Istanbul's proximity to Europe and The Middle East has made it a melting pot of both cultures. You will be able to see this reflected in the exhibits while visiting the Istanbul Modern Art Museum and the Pera Museum. Beyoglu Street, close to Pera Museum, frequently hosts contemporary art exhibitions. Your itinerary will be updated to take advantage of any new and important exhibitions offered during your stay. The highlight of this trip will be a visit to the "Museum of Innocence" which is based on a novel of the same name written by Turkish Nobel-Laureate writer, Orhan Pamuk. This novel, published on August 29, 2008, is an account of love between a wealthy businessman Kemal and a poorer distant relation Fusun during the period 1975 to 1984 in Istanbul. Although less frequented by the casual tourist, Pamuk has established an actual "Museum of Innocence", based on the museum he describes in his novel. In it he recreates scenes of everyday life and culture of Istanbul, to give the viewer a taste of the Historical period in which the novel is set. After sampling this rich literary aspect of Turkish culture, you will return to your hotel. Overnight in Istanbul. [B]
Day 4: Istanbul
Your day will start with a stroll from the old city of Istanbul to the Golden Horn to catch a regular Bosporus cruise between the Asian and European continents. For an hour and more, you will be floating through the real history channel. Big mansions located by the water will take you to the 19th Century of Istanbul and your return will give amazing opportunities to take pictures of the Old City of Istanbul, once capital to Byzantium and Ottoman empires. You will embark by the Spice market and stroll in and around the bazaar where the Spices from India was sold to the Ottoman merchants before they sailed to Europe. The Spice market is now hosting several Turkish delight shops giving you the opportunity to taste the great variety of Turkish Delights. Near the market, a hidden gem, the Rustem Pasha Mosque houses the best examples of Ottoman tiles, making the Blue Mosque jealous. Overnight in Istanbul. [B]
Day 5: Istanbul, Cappadocia
Our guide and driver will take you to Istanbul airport for your flight to Cappadocia. After a one-hour flight, you will meet with your driver in Cappadocia airport and drive to the most magical land in Turkey. First, you will visit Zelve Open Air Museum which is an impressive village composed of troglodyte houses, cave churches and a mosque giving us broad information about the lifestyles of the Christian and Muslim communities of Cappadocia. Lunch will be served in a local restaurant in Avanos town. After a coffee break by the Red River in Avanos, we will drive to Devrent (imagination) valley to walk over the lunar landscape of Cappadocia. We will continue to Urgup town then to taste the interesting local wines of the region and check in to our hotel. Overnight in Cappadocia. [B/L]
Day 6 – Cappadocia
Our guide and driver will meet you at your hotel after your second breakfast and you will start exploring the rest of Cappadocia. You will first walk around the beautiful fairy chimneys of Monks Valley which looks like a forest of gigantic chimneys. You will continue to the Open-Air Museum of Goreme then to see the rock carved churches of the Christian monks once used to live in the area. The frescoes painted on the walls of the churches are dating back from the 10th and the 11th Century and the whole museum is registered by UNESCO. You will have a local lunch in Goreme village and continue to a nice viewpoint to taste the Turkish coffee. We will continue to the underground city of Kaymakli then to explore the caves built by the people to protect their goods, families and their animals from the enemies. We will also visit the old Greek village of Mustafapasa which was called Sinasos by the Greeks lived there until 1923. The houses built by those people are still outstanding among the stone houses of central Anatolia and the doors are really making you feel like walking in a Greek Village.
