Day 2: Amman, Jerash, Petra
After breakfast at the hotel you’ll be picked-up for today’s excursion to Jerash - city of the Decapolis, located about 28 miles North of Amman in the fertile heights of the Gilad. Visit the ancient Roman city with colonnaded streets, the baths and the hill of the top Temple etc. Lunch at a local restaurant. Then drive to Amman for a city tour of the Jordanian Capital including busy downtown and the affluent residential area of Abdoun. From there, take the desert road on your way to Petra for overnight. [B/L]
Day 3: Petra (Wadi Rum)
This morning visit Petra the Nabataean city founded by the Edomites in the 8th century BC. The Nabataeans took control of the city of Petra in the 6th century AE. The city of Petra and the Nabataean kingdom prospered thanks to their geographical location on the caravan routes especially used for incense and spices. The city was abandoned in the 8th century CE after several earthquakes and a change in trade routes. Forgotten from the western world, the ancient city was rediscovered at the beginning of the 19th century. Contrary to what one could imagine, the city of Petra is immense! In the 4th century BC, it extended over more than 2,470 acres. The golden age of Petra dates back to the first century CE and it is estimated that the city population was between 20,000 and 40,000 souls! Enjoy lunch at Al Basin Restaurant and continue to Wadi Rum for a 2-hour desert safari on a 4x4 Bedouin jeep. As soon as we take the road to the region of Wadi Rum, we are in the real desert with camels in freedom, red sand, red cliffs and just a paved straight strip serving as road. This desert offers fantastic and grandiose landscapes, made famous by the movie "Lawrence of Arabia" and described in the book "The Seven Pillars of Wisdom". The Wadi Rum is unique and breathtaking with its vast expanses of sand, from which emerge rocks of spectacular shapes and colors. According to historians, it appears that these rocks are at least 30 million years old. With erosion and the effect of time, these rocks are more impressive. By the way, their beauty earned the Wadi Rum Desert its World Heritage status in 2011. After the fun return to Petra for overnight. [B/L]
Day 4: Petra, Kerak, Mt. Nebo, Madaba (Baptism site), Dead Sea
This morning, take the desert road to visit Kerak castle. As you approach Kerak from the ancient Royal Road to the East or from the Dead Sea to the West, the striking silhouette of this walled city and its castle will instantly make you understand why the destiny of Kings and Nations have been played here for millennia. A former Crusader bastion, Kerak is built at an altitude of 2,950 feet and lies within the walls of the old city. The city is home to a population of 170,000 and can still boast of 19th century Ottoman buildings, restored restaurants and public squares. But it is undeniably the Crusader castle that marks the landscape. Continue to Mount Nebo, which would be the place where Moses contemplated the promised land before dying, located 2,625 feet high and offering a superb view of the Jordan Valley, the Dead Sea and Israel when the sky is not too foggy. From here, continue to Madaba to visit St. George's Church and its famous mosaic depicting a map of Jerusalem and the Holy Land. This map, dating back to the 6th century, contained more than 2 million pieces carved in stone, and covered 1,000 sq. feet on the floor of the church! Today only about a quarter remains. The work and the level of detail is impressive! Enjoy lunch at Local restaurant before driving to Bethany Beyond Jordan, the site of John the Baptist's Settlement, where Jesus was baptized. The site has long been known from the Bible (John 1:28 and 10:40) and from the Byzantine and medieval texts. The Bethany area sites formed part of the early Christian pilgrimage route between Jerusalem, the Jordan River, and Mount Nebo. The area is also associated with the biblical account of the Elijah Prophet ascending to heaven on a chariot of fire. Continue to the Dead sea for relaxation and overnight. [B/L]
