Day 2: Belgrade
Today is dedicated to a visit of Belgrade starting with the Belgrade Fortress located on the geographic border between the Pannonian Plain and the Balkan Peninsula, which in antiquity gave it an important strategic role. It stood at the crossroads of the Via Militaris which led to Constantinople and the Via Egnatia which, from Thessaloniki, entered the interior of the continent. The Sava and the Danube were major waterways. Today, the Belgrade Fortress presents itself as a classic artillery fortification, like the Petrovaradin Fortress. The different eras can be recognized by the color of the stone used in the construction. White stone is characteristic of the Byzantine period and the late Serbian period, while red stone is characteristic of the Ottoman and Austrian periods. Continue to Knez Mihajlova (Prince Michel’s Street) and Republic Square. Prince Michel’s Street is the main pedestrian street in the city of Belgrade. Due to the age and the value of its architectural heritage, including constructions dating from the 1870s, the street is included in the list of cultural monuments of exceptional importance in the Republic of Serbia, in addition to being considered one of the most beautiful pedestrian streets in Eastern Europe. It is a place to walk and a meeting point for Belgraders. Across the street are the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, the Cervantes Institute, the Goethe-Institute, the French Cultural Center and the British Council. There, you’ll also find international brands like Mango, Zara, Springfield, Reply, Azzaro, Swarowski, Cesare Paciotti, Miss Sixty, etc. Not far, located on Republic Square, is the National Museum established in 1844, the oldest museum in Serbia, is located on Republic Square, in the urban municipality of Stari grad. The museum's collections include more than 400,000 reference objects and works, including a large collection of paintings. The French Art collection includes more than 250 paintings, from the 16th century to the early 20th century. It hosts works by Gaugin, Renoir, Toulouse-Lautrec, Matisse, Monet, Degas, Pissarro, Pierre Bonnard, Callot, Charles-François Daubigny, etc. Next, you’ll have time for lunch at one of the many local restaurants. In the afternoon, visit Saint Sava Cathedral a church dedicated to Saint Sava, founder of the Serbian Orthodox Church. The cathedral was designed in a Serbo-Byzantine style, with four towers 145-foot high. The dome is 230-foot high and the main cross 39-foot, making it a total height of 269 feet, allowing the church to be clearly visible in the city skyline of Belgrade. Then, continue to the Skadarlija district, generally considered to be the bohemian district of the Serbian capital, a bit like Paris’ Montmartre, is a big attraction for tourists, not only because of its bohemian side but also for its well-known gastronomic and more popular restaurants offering Serbian cuisine, especially grilled meat served with beer. Will, take advantage of a location to have dinner before returning to the hotel for overnight. [B/D]

After the visit drive another 68 miles to Mokra Gora and visit the ethnic village of Drvengrad, a traditional hamlet built by Emir Kusturica for his film Life is a Miracle. Drvengrad is also known as Kustendorf, as a play on German Dorf (village) and Kusturica's nickname, Kusta. The streets of the village bear the names of different people whom Kusturica holds in high esteem or whom he finds personally significant: Nikola Tesla, Ernesto Che Guevara, Diego Maradona, Ingmar Bergman, Joe Strummer, Novak Djokovic and, of course, Ivo Andric in the main street. In 2010, he was visited by famous actor Johnny Depp whose statue was unveiled during his stay. Stop at Mokra Gora for lunch and continuation to Ovcar Banja. Free time to explore on your own. With more than 300 monasteries built in the gorges since the 14th century, ten of which are preserved today, Ovcar-Kablar Gorge is also known as the Serbian Athos Mountains. The gorges are dug by Mount Ovcar, which rises to 3,230 feet in the south and Mount Kablar, another peak rising 2,900 feet in the north. These two mountains give their names to the gorges. Between these two depressions, the river meanders for 9 miles. Visit 2 of the monasteries in the morning.
